For Georgia state taxes in 2026, “GA Dependent” and “Adjustment Allowance” serve different purposes.
GA Dependent Allowance (Form G-4):
This affects how much Georgia tax is withheld from your paycheck. Each dependent claimed reduces taxable income for withholding purposes by $4,000 annually. The more dependents claimed, the less tax withheld from each paycheck, which can increase take-home pay but may reduce your refund or increase taxes owed at year-end.
Adjustment Allowance (Georgia Form 500/500EZ):
This is used on your Georgia income tax return to reduce your actual taxable income before the 5.19% state tax rate is applied. It includes certain state-specific income adjustments, exemptions, or add-backs and is not related to paycheck withholding.
Key Difference:
• GA Dependent = payroll withholding adjustment through your employer
• Adjustment Allowance = deduction/adjustment used when calculating actual Georgia tax liability on your return
Example:
Claiming 2 dependents on your G-4 reduces withholding calculations by $8,000 annually. Separate adjustment allowances on your Georgia return may further reduce taxable income when filing your taxes.
